Australia have picked up their first win at the women's Champions Trophy in London, beating New Zealand 3-1 on Sunday (Monday AEST).

Goals from Emily Smith, Jodie Kenny and Grace Stewart ensured Karri McMahon's 100th match for the Hockeyroos was a victorious one.

The result follows an opening-day 2-2 draw against USA.

Smith opened the scoring on Sunday with a field goal in the third minute, but New Zealand were quick to respond, as captain Anita McLaren expertly scored from a penalty corner in that same minute.

Australia regained the lead in the 18th minute via a Kenny penalty corner goal, before Stewart sealed the result with a field goal in the 40th, beating New Zealand `keeper Sally Rutherford with a second attempt.

Hockeyroos coach Adam Commens hailed his team's performance.

"I was very pleased with how the girls went about their business and how they improved from game one to game two," he said.

"I thought our defence was far more consistent today. We were just a little bit loose against the USA - it's something we addressed and I thought we were much better today."

Celebrating her 100th game for Australia, McMahon said it was a special moment.

"It was an amazing atmosphere against New Zealand and what a wonderful way to top it off with a win today," she said.

Australia's next game is against Argentina on Tuesday.
