Hockeyroos end NZ's Olympic dream

The Hockeyroos have held on to defeat NZ 3-2 in a vital hockey clash.

The Hockeyroos have ended New Zealand's hopes of qualifying for the Rio Olympics with a 3-2 win in the Oceania Cup final.

Australia, who had already qualified for the Olympics, opened the scoring when Glenn Turner got his stick to a crash ball into the circle.

Veteran Jamie Dwyer doubled the lead, tapping home after good lead-up work from Fergus Kavanagh.

The Black Sticks gradually worked themselves into the contest and pulled a goal back early in the second quarter, James Coughlan firing home with a reverse stick shot.

They went in search for the equaliser and believed they should have had a penalty corner late in the third quarter, only to have no decision given.

Then the Hockeyroos capitalised, sweeping the ball upfield before Trent Mitton finished clinically from an acute angle.

New Zealand hit back with seven minutes left, when Kane Russell scored but they couldn't find the the tying goal and miss out on making the Olympics for the first time since Sydney 2000.
