Hockeyroos lose to Britain, top group

The Hockeyroos have suffered their first loss in the women's World League finals, losing 1-0 to Great Britain in Argentina.

Australia's women's hockey team have topped their group at the World League finals despite losing 1-0 to Great Britain.

The Hockeyroos were unable to respond to a first-half goal from Helen Richardson on Tuesday (Wednesday AEDT) in the Argentinian city of Rosario, but after China beat Argentina 3-1 in the final match of pool B, Australia stayed at the summit of the group.

All eight teams in the tournament qualify for the quarter-finals with the pool seedings determining the last-eight match-ups.

The Hockeyroos will face the bottom-placed side in Pool A, with Wednesday's final preliminary matches - the Netherlands against South Korea and Germany against New Zealand - to decide who that will be.

World No.2 Australia beat Argentina 2-1 and China 1-0 in their other two pool matches.

"After a great previous performance against Argentina, which we worked really well together with and without the ball, today this was lacking," said Hockeyroos coach Adam Commens.

"We created enough chances in the second half, however, our skill execution and effort was not as good as our first two matches, which is disappointing."

The quarter-finals begin on Friday (Saturday AEDT).
