Hockeyroos ready for Champions trophy tilt

The Australian women's hockey team are hopeful of finishing better than their World Cup fourth place in the Champions Trophy.

The Hockeyroos have warmed up for their Champions Trophy campaign with a 2-1 win over hosts China before their opening game against defending champions Argentina.

Skipper Emily Smith scored Australia's opener with a field goal before veteran Jodie Kenny netted a late drag flick from a penalty corner to clinch the win in an shortened game.

The Hockeyroos arrived in Changzhou earlier this week, acclimatising to the cold and wet conditions in China before Saturday's opener.

They are hopeful of topping their mid-year World Cup success when they eliminated Argentina before finishing in fourth place.

Hockeyroos defender Karri McMahon, who will compete at her third Champions Trophy, said the team had prepared well.

She said they wanted to improve on their World Cup semi-final finish but predicted the conditions could make it tough.

"As a group we really want to put together some strong performances following on from the World Cup," McMahon said.

"We want to start to look towards our selections for next year and Tokyo.

"It's a bit of a different climate than what we're used to, and it will be a challenge for us."

World No.3 Australia have a tough tak ahead of them against China (ranked 11th), Argentina (fourth), Olympic champions Great Britain (England ranked second), world No.1 Netherlands and the invited Japan (14th).

It's the last time the Champions Trophy will be held before the introduction of the new FIH Pro League in 2019.
