Charley Hoffman made a nine-foot birdie putt on the final to win the US PGA Tour's Texas Open.

The 39-year-old American closed with a three-under 69 at TPC San Antonio for a one-stroke victory over compatriot Patrick Reed on Sunday (Monday AEST).

Hoffman finished at 12-under 276 and earned $US1.1m ($A1.45 million) for his fourth US PGA Tour victory.

"It's won," an emotional Hoffman told CBS Sports, his voice cracking.

"This month was hard, being in contention every Sunday and not closing the door. It's not me. It was nice to make that putt (on 18), that's for sure. I'm happy."

Playing alongside Hoffman, Reed also birdied the par-5 18th for a 69.

He missed birdie putts inside eight feet on the par-3 16th and par-4 17th.

Chad Collins was third at 10 under after a 69.

Stuart Appleby was the best-placed Australian at six under in a tie for 21st, two shots clear of countryman Aaron Baddeley.
