Holdom charged with mother-daughter murder

The NSW man accused of killing Karlie Pearce-Stevenson now faces a fresh murder charge, as detectives allege he took her little girl's life days later.

The man accused of murdering Karlie Pearce-Stevenson waited up to six days before violently killing her little girl, police allege.

Daniel James Holdom, 41, was charged last month with murdering Ms Pearce-Stevenson, five years after trail-bikers stumbled upon her remains in the Belanglo State Forest south of Sydney.

Now NSW homicide detectives have charged Holdom with murdering the 20-year-old woman's daughter Khandalyce Kiara Pearce, who was aged just two.

Holdom did not emerge from the cells during a brief mention at Parramatta Local Court on Tuesday afternoon and did not apply for bail, which was formally refused by Magistrate Joan Baptie.

Court documents suggest Khandalyce was killed in Wallaroo, just north of Canberra, on December 19, 2008 or in the very early hours of the following day.

Police believe Ms Pearce-Stevenson was murdered on either December 14 or 15.

The pair suffered "violent deaths", Detective Superintendent Mick Willing told reporters in Sydney.

"This investigation has been intense," he said.

Khandalyce's remains were found in July this year, near a suitcase dumped on the side of a South Australian highway, more than 1000km from where she was killed.

Police have previously refused to give details on the cause of death of either the young mum from Alice Springs or her little girl.

It's alleged Ms Pearce-Stevenson's identity, bank account and mobile phone were used for years after her death to mislead family and defraud social services, and that up to $100,000 was taken from her bank account between 2008 and 2012.

In a statement delivered by South Australian Victims' Rights Commissioner Michael O'Connell, the family of the young mother and daughter welcomed the latest development in the case.

"It is welcome because those who loved Khandalyce want her killer called to account for such a despicable crime," the statement said.

"It is also welcome because, until now, Khandalyce's grandfather has worried that somewhere there was a child killer or child killers at large, so other children might not be safe."

The case against Holdom, whose address is listed in court papers as Sydney's Silverwater jail, is due to return to court next month.
