Hundreds of homeless and disadvantaged people now have a roof over their heads as dwellings built from the sales of valuable NSW properties are completed.
Nearly 650 dwellings have been completed or are being constructed around Sydney after the NSW government sold off hundreds of multi-million dollar properties in the inner-city suburb of Millers Point last year.
Social Housing Minister Brad Hazzard said the sales were made to "assist more vulnerable residents into housing" in a statement released on Sunday.
Hundreds of people on the housing waiting list have already or will soon move into the new houses, which are spread from Penrith to Canada Bay and even as far south as Wollongong and Shellharbour.
Family and Community Services Minister Gabrielle Upton said in 2014 that the housing system was unsustainable and that for every house sold in Millers Point, three could be built in other parts of Sydney.
More than 570 people who were living in social housing in Millers Point have moved into their choice of accommodation in other parts of Sydney, such as Pyrmont, Glebe, Woolloomooloo and Marrickville, Mr Hazzard said on Sunday.
The properties, most of which were heritage-listed, were largely sold to domestic buyers, a minister spokeswoman said.
The 650 dwellings are the first stage of the $500 million project, which will accommodate the construction of an estimated 1500 new housing units in total.
"I thank the Millers Point residents who have moved for understanding the need to provide more social housing for the 60,000 vulnerable people on the waiting list," Mr Hazzard said.
