A strong, shallow earthquake has hit in a sparsely populated area in southern Peru near Lake Titicaca in the Andes, but local media say there are no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage.
The US Geological Survey measured the quake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.3, while Peru's geological institute measured the tremor at 5.5.
The USGS says the quake's epicentre was about 26 miles (43 kilometres) north- northeast of Huarichancara in Peru's Puno region. It occurred 1.8 miles (3 kilometres) deep.
Local radio said shaking was felt in the city of Juliaca and other towns in the region.
Homes made of adobe in the province of Lampa completely collapsed in the quake, Mayor Nicolas Quispe said on local broadcaster RPP.
Residents in the city of Juliaca ran into the streets in fear, according to RPP.
Civil defense institute Indeci said the quake had damaged homes and communication lines but said there were no immediate reports of death.
There are no major mines in the vicinity.
