Honduras stadium stampede kills four

Four people have died and 25 were injured in a stampeded at a soccer stadium in Honduras.

Thousands of soccer fans trying to force their way into a stadium for a championship match stampeded in panic when police fired tear gas, with at least four people killed and 25 injured.

A spokesman for University Teaching Hospital says the victims died from suffocation and multiple broken bones after being caught in the melee on Sunday.

Spokesman Miguel Osorio says a pregnant mother also lost her baby after suffering injuries.

The stampede happened at the National Stadium as fans tried to push their way into the jammed venue to see a game between Motagua and Honduras Progreso.

About 600 police officers were guarding the stadium and used water cannon and tear gas trying to push back the crowds.
