Dozens of Colombians who are at risk of a rare inherited form of Alzheimer's disease have embarked on a journey to the United States to take part in ground-breaking research.

Thousands of people in the isolated north of the country carry a genetic mutation that can strike victims as young as 45.

But now members of the younger generation are taking part in experimental brain scans, Tom Clarke, Channel 4 News Science Editor, reports.

Alzheimer's Australia says that similar resarch is taking place in Australia, led by the National Ageing Research Institute and the CSIRO.

Researchers are looking for people aged 60 and over who have been diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's disease - or people 70 and over who are worried about their memory.
