Former Queensland captain James Hopes has taken on coaching roles with the Bulls and Brisbane Heat Twenty20 side.

Hopes retired last season after a 15-year first-class career that also featured 84 one-day internationals for Australia.

Hopes has been named to join Bulls coach Phil Jaques to work with Heat assistant Shane Bond under head coach Daniel Vettori in the Big Bash League.

Hopes will also hold the Bulls' assistant coaching reins while working with Queensland Cricket youth teams.

Former Test quick and national selector Andy Bichel will also assist Hopes at the Bulls and with Queensland Cricket's youth pathways program.
