Eight years ago, Sydney's Cronulla riots cast an ugly shadow over the city following violent, racially motivated exchanges.

Widely condemned by authorities at the time, the incident left a deep scar on the area.

But a Surfing Australia event to be held next year over the Australia Day weekend, hopes to change perceptions.

World champion Sally Fitzgibbon will be among the competitors, representing her Werri Beach Club from Gerigong in the southern NSW at the finals.
