Australians installed a record amount of rooftop solar power in 2017, potentially saving a combined $2 billion on electricity bills over the next decade.

That's the verdict of the latest Renewable Energy Index released on Thursday by Green Energy Markets and GetUp.

Households installed more than 1078 megawatts of solar on their roofs over the course of the year, beating the previous record set in 2012.

As well, investments made in large-scale renewables over 2017 will produce 10,000GWh a year -- enough electricity to power the whole of Tasmania.

GetUp environmental campaigns director Miriam Lyons said the figures showed Australians had embraced renewable energy.
