Hot weather records tumble across Qld

Sweltering conditions have caused weather records across Queensland to tumble, with no end in sight.

Weather records have tumbled across Queensland as parts of the sunshine state continue to swelter in hot conditions.

Residents living in the outback town of Birdsville endured 10 consecutive days of 45C and above until Monday, exceeding the previous six-day run that occurred in the same town in 2004 and 2013.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Mark Trenorden said the Australian record of 13 days occurred in Marree in South Australia in January 1973.

"This is the longest spell of 45 ever in Queensland," he told AAP.

State weather records have also fallen in Cloncurry and Camooweal, where the mercury has hit 40 degrees or above for the past 39 days, with no reprieve in sight.

The previous run of 31 days had been recorded at several locations across the state over the years, while the Australian record stands at 106 days and occurred at Marble Bar in WA during the summer of 1921-22.

Mr Trenorden said the hot Queensland weather was being caused by a high over the Tasman Sea and hot northerly winds over the interior.

"There's no cool change or anything coming," he said.

But it's different story further north.

A monsoon tough located in the Gulf of Carpentaria is expected to strengthen and move across far north Queensland on Thursday.

There is a moderate, or 20 to 50 per cent chance, it will develop into a cyclone on Friday or Saturday.
