Hours left for voters to enrol for poll

Finance Minister Mathias Cormann says every vote on July 2 counts, as the deadline to enrol draws closer.

With polling showing the two major political parties are still neck-and-neck, Australians are being reminded every vote counts.

And if they don't hop online and enrol by Monday evening, their's won't.

The deadline to enrol for the July 2 poll is 8pm (AEST).

"This election was always going to be close," Finance Minister Mathias Cormann told reporters in Canberra on Monday.

"That means that every single vote matters."

The latest Newspoll shows the government has failed to claw back Labor's 51-49 per cent lead after preferences, reversing the Fairfax-Ipsos poll at the weekend.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's support continued to fall as Opposition Leader Bill Shorten's standing with voters hit a 12-month high.

Mr Shorten at the weekend reminded voters Labor was the underdog, while saying he had noticed a "distinct awakening of interest in an alternative" during his election campaign.
