Netflix has resumed work on the sixth and final season of its critically acclaimed series 'House of Cards', months after allegations of sexual assault and harassment against its star Kevin Spacey saw production suspended.

The White House drama, which has been nominated for 53 Emmys throughout its run, was thrown into chaos when the allegations emerged in October last year that led to Netflix and studio Media Rights Capital (MRC) firing Spacey.

Season 6 of 'House of Cards' will consist of eight episodes, which is less than previous seasons, and will star Robin Wright as Claire Underwood, the wife of Spacey's character who became US president in the fifth season.

Joining the cast will be Academy Award nominees Diane Lane and Greg Kinnear.

Ms Lane was nominated for an Oscar in 2003 for her leading role in the film 'Unfaithful'.

She has also been nominated for two Emmys and three Golden Globes.

Mr Kinnear is known for roles in films such as 'As Good As It Gets,' for which he was nominated for an Academy Award, 'Little Miss Sunshine,' and the miniseries 'The Kennedys.'

Regular cast members Michael Kelly, Jayne Atkinson, Patricia Clarkson, Constance Zimmer, Derek Cecil, Campbell Scott and Boris McGiver will also return.

Spacey hasn't been seen publicly since releasing a statement saying he was seeking treatment for an unspecified ailment.

As well as being fired from 'House of Cards',  his part in the movie 'All the Money in the World' was reshot using actor Christopher Plummer, and his biopic project about Gore Vidal with Netflix has been cancelled.
