How Australians will vote for the Senate

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has unveiled plans to change the way Australians vote for the Senate.

CHANGES TO SENATE VOTING

* Voters will be encouraged to number at least six above-the-line boxes in order of their choice.

* A ballot will still be formal if one or fewer than six boxes are numbered above the line.

* The number of allowable below-the-line mistakes increased from three to five, as long as 90 per cent of the ballot paper is filled in correctly.

* Group and individual voting tickets abolished.

* Individuals prevented from holding relevant official positions in multiple parties.

* To reduce voter confusion between parties with similar names, political parties allowed to have their logo included on the ballot paper.
