How Turnbull's new cabinet team shapes up

A look at all the winners and losers from Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's broad-ranging reshuffle.

CHANGES IN THE TURNBULL MINISTRY

WINNERS

CHRISTIAN PORTER

The former social services minister becomes Attorney-General, replacing London-bound George Brandis, who will become Australia's UK High Commissioner. Porter served as WA attorney-general for almost four years and state treasurer for more than two.

BARNABY JOYCE

The deputy prime minister drops the agriculture and water portfolios to pick up infrastructure and transport after dumping Victorian Nationals colleague Darren Chester.

DAVID LITTLEPROUD

The first-term Queensland MP has made a meteoric rise from the backbench to cabinet after being handed the agriculture and water portfolios. With a background in agribusiness banking, heavy scrutiny will be applied to the rookie minister, who was one of four lower house MPs to vote against same-sex marriage legislation.

JOHN McVEIGH

Another little-known Queensland backbencher catapulted into cabinet as regional development and local government minister. The first-term LNP MP was a minister in the Newman state government.

MICHAELIA CASH

Picks up the innovation portfolio from Arthur Sinodinos as he battles cancer. The former employment, now jobs minister has had some of her responsibilities absorbed by new Workplace Minister Craig Laundy. Cash escaped a demotion after her office was embroiled in a scandal over raids on a union office.

BRIDGET McKENZIE

The newly-appointed deputy Nationals leader has been elevated to cabinet taking on sport, rural health, rural communications.

PETER DUTTON

Confirmed in his new role heading up the new home affairs ministry. The move brings Australia's immigration, border, law enforcement and domestic security agencies into a single mega-portfolio.

DAN TEHAN

Joins the cabinet after calls for more representation for country Liberal MPs, taking over the social services portfolio from Christian Porter.

ALAN TUDGE

Switches from human services to citizenship and multicultural affairs. Along with Angus Taylor, he has been promoted to positions which support Peter Dutton's new home affairs ministry.

ANGUS TAYLOR

Another country Liberal smiling after the reshuffle, Taylor takes on the law enforcement and cybersecurity portfolios.

CRAIG LAUNDY

Becomes small and family business, workplaces and deregulation minister after almost two years in a junior role. Worked in his family's Sydney pub empire before entering politics.

MATHIAS CORMANN

The finance minister will become Leader of the Senate and also take over as Special Minister of State.

LOSERS

DARREN CHESTER

Booted to the backbench in a shock move to boost Queensland Nationals' representation in cabinet. Described the experience as "character-building" after being demoted despite not making a major blunder.

KEITH PITT

Loses job as assistant trade, tourism and investment minister, wiping more than $100,000 off his annual salary.
