The former Prime Minister John Howard has been on the hustings in Western Australia to boost the chances of embattled Premier Colin Barnett's bid for a third term in office.

Mr Howard threw his weight behind the West Australian Liberal Party's decision to preference One Nation ahead of its traditional allies - the Nationals - in the upper house ahead of next month's state election.

WA correspondent Ryan Emery has been following developments.

He told Kristina Kukolja that in previous federal and state elections Mr Howard took a different stance.
