Former Prime Minister John Howard has hit the streets in Adelaide as he continues to campaign in South Australia.

Mr Howard was joined by Hindmarsh MP Matt Williams early on Wednesday as the pair braved the cold and wet conditions and a lone heckler on their morning walk.

He will campaign with Mr Williams who holds his western suburbs seat by less than two per cent.

It is the coalition's most marginal seat in SA and if a swing against the government emerges at next month's election he's likely to be the first to fall.

Although his prospects of holding on received a boost recently when Adelaide was confirmed as the site for the construction of Australia's next fleet of submarines.

On Tuesday, Mr Howard campaigned for former minister Jamie Briggs who has a 12 per cent margin in the Adelaide Hills seat of Mayo but is facing a tough challenge from a Nick Xenophon Team candidate.

Mr Howard says he doesn't think the Xenophon group can win lower house seats, but nothing is being taken for granted.

And he doesn't believe there's widespread anger at the coalition or a thirst to change the government.

"I've been to Queensland, I've been to the western suburbs of Sydney, and I don't find anger," he said.
