FP - England's David Howell ended a seven-year winless drought with a playoff victory over American Peter Uihlein on Sunday to capture the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
The former Ryder Cup player birdied the second extra hole to defeat Uihlein after both players had ended regulation play on 23-under-par on the Old Course.
Howell beat Tiger Woods in 2006 to win the inaugural HSBC Champions event and has played more than 200 tournaments since his last victory in the BMW Championship later that year.
"It's incredible. The sun is shining and the crowd have come out," said the Englishman, who had lost all four of his previous playoffs.
"I have never played in an Open Championship here, but to win a golf tournament as a professional at the home of golf is quite amazing and I am really thrilled.
"I was really nervous all week and strangely less nervous today. I can't explain that at all. I stayed calm and smooth under pressure and that was really pleasing.
"It's been a long, long road from the depths of despair. I have had a lot of support from people around me and this is as much for them as it is for me."
England's Tom Lewis (64) and Ireland's Shane Lowry (68) shared third place at 22-under.
Charl Schwartzel of South Africa and German Martin Kaymer were in group of five to finish four shots off the pace, one stroke ahead of Darren Clarke.
Another South African Ernie Els ended six shots behind Howell and Uihlein.
