Huawei ban won't affect sport sponsorships

AFL club Gold Coast and the NRL's Canberra Raiders won't be casualties of the government's decision to ban Huawei from rolling out Australia's 5G network.

Professional sporting sponsorships won't be affected by the federal government's decision to ban Huawei from rolling out Australia's 5G network.

AFL club Gold Coast and the NRL's Canberra Raiders have lucrative agreements with the Chinese-owned telecommunications giant and Huawei has confirmed they will go ahead as planned.

Both clubs have contracts with Huawei until the end of the 2019 season.

Huawei corporate affairs director Jeremy Mitchell says it's "business as usual" and the company will make a call next year about potentially extending the deals.

"It doesn't affect the current signing we have with both of them," Mr Mitchell told AAP.

"By the end of the season next year we will be the longest-serving corporate sponsor the Canberra Raiders have ever had.

"We'll see those through and make a decision about re-signing next year.

"We're very proud of them (the sporting contracts) and love being associated with both the teams."

The government has decided the involvement of Huawei and ZTE Corp, another Chinese telecommunications company, in the rollout presented too much of a national security risk.

In announcing the ban last week, the government expressed concerns about involvement from companies "likely to be subject to extrajudicial directions from a foreign government that conflict with Australian law."

Huawei has publicly argued it would never hand over Australian customer data to Chinese spy agencies, but the government said no combination of technical security controls sufficiently mitigated the risk.
