Huawei to release 'charging' phone

The latest mobile phone offering from Chinese manufacturer Huawei, which is twice as big as an iPhone 5, can be used to charge other mobiles.

Huawei, China's largest mobile phone manufacturer, is releasing a phone that can be thought of as the inflight refuelling system of the mobile world: it can be used to recharge other phones.

The Ascend Mate2 has a 6.1 inch (15.4 cm) screen, making it more than twice as big as an iPhone 5.

It's almost the size of a tablet, giving rise to the half-joking term "phablet".

It's the successor to a phone of the same size launched last year.

The first Ascend Mate was not sold in the US, but Huawei CEO Richard Yu said the Mate2 would be.

He didn't say when or for how much.

The huge size of the Ascend Mate provides space for a large battery.

Through a USB port, this battery can be used to charge smaller phones.
