Tens of millions of people tuned in online to watch the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge tie the knot at Westminster Abbey.

There were 72 million live online streams of the wedding on The Royal Channel on YouTube on April 29, a Clarence House spokeswoman
said.

Throughout the course of the day, the footage was viewed more than 101 million times.

The spokeswoman said the channel received an additional 100,000 requests in the seconds around the balcony kiss.

On the wedding day, there were nine million views recorded on the British Monarchy Facebook page and more than 40,000 people opted to followed Clarence House's Twitter account.

People also used social media to view pictures of the newlyweds - the British Monarchy account on Flickr was visited 11 million times.

A Clarence House spokeswoman said the most popular picture posted online was that of the Duke of Cambridge and his bride kneeling at the altar.

At its peak, the official royal wedding website processed more than 2,000 requests per second.

The videos which have been uploaded on the site have so far been viewed 11.4 million times, the spokeswoman said.

Well-wishers have also expressed congratulations to the couple online. So far, more than 300 personal video messages have been uploaded on a "wedding book" on YouTube.
