Hugh Jackman has won Tony Awards, hosted the Oscars and is the star of the multi-billion dollar Wolverine and X-Men movie franchises.

We can add another title to his resume: Vegemite ambassador.

Last week US talkshow host Jimmy Fallon tried Vegemite on his show and, as Americans tend to do, convulsed as he took his first bite.

Jackman saw the segment and on Monday night went to the New York set of Fallon's Tonight Show to teach him the correct way to eat Australia's infamous black spread.

"I've got a bit of a bone to pick with you, mate," Jackman told Fallon in the segment, which can be viewed on YouTube, said.

"You were talking a bit of smack last week about Vegemite."

Fallon politely replied: "I feel like it was missing a few ingredients. Something was off."

"You didn't eat it the right way," Jackman countered.

To the delight of the live audience Jackman pulled out a toaster, put it on Fallon's desk, and also had a jar of Vegemite, two pieces of white bread, butter and some butter knives.

"It's not like Nutella where you scoop it on. It's refined," the Sydney-raised actor said.

When the toast popped Jackman explained how you put butter on and then scrape a little Vegemite.

"Just a nice thin layer of butter," Jackman said.

"The butter has to melt."

As Jackman put the thin scrape of Vegemite on he told Fallon: "See this? Maximum Vegemite."

And the verdict?

"Much better," Fallon, attempting to look convincing, said as he chewed the toast.

"Tastes like salt."

Jackman also gave Fallon's band leader, The Roots drummer Questlove, a taste. "Oh snap," Questlove, also not so convincing, said.

"I like it."

Jackman even came up with a couple of slogans that might, or might not, entice millions of Americans to try Vegemite, which can be bought at large US supermarket chains and speciality food stores.

"It is beautiful yeast extract direct from outback Australia," was one of Jackman's slogans.

The other was: "Vegemite: Yeast extract. It gets you salivating".
