Police say human trafficking goes largely unreported in Australia and is difficult to investigate -- with few cases actually proceeding to prosecution.

In Victoria, a program has been launched to better equip officers in identifying its key indicators.

The move comes on the back of data released by the Australian Federal Police showing a dramatic doubling of identified cases in sectors such as the labour market and sex industry.

Victoria Police Detective Superintendent Rod Jouning spoke to Kristina Kukolja.
