Sunni Muslim militants in Iraq have been making further gains as they make a rapid military advance against the Shi'ite-led government in Baghdad.

Militants have seized the city of Tikrit, but their assault on Samarra has been repulsed.

The offensive by the group called the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, has caused about 500,000 people to flee from Mosul, creating a humanitarian crisis.

Saleh Dabbakeh is with the International Committee of the Red Cross in Baghdad.

He spoke with Zara Zaher.
