Hundreds of violent criminals deported after having visas cancelled: Dutton

Murderers, child sex offenders and rapists were among almost 1200 non-citizens to have their visas cancelled last year.

Hundreds of violent thugs and sex pests were among almost 1200 foreign-born criminals to have their visas ripped up last year.

Murderers, child sex offenders and rapists were among the foreign nationals to face deportation in 2017.

There were 430 visas cancelled on character grounds in NSW, along with 300 in Queensland and 217 in Victoria.

Hundreds more were cancelled across the other states and territories.

"I think by kicking these people out we're sending a very strong statement," Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton told 2GB radio on Thursday.

"I think Australians expect people to abide by the law and they must - especially if you're a guest in our country."
