Malcolm Turnbull has added "very significantly" to the climate policy developed by his predecessor Tony Abbott, Environment Minister Greg Hunt says.

Mr Hunt said the prime minister had built on what had been developed over a number of years with several specific initiatives, including the creation of the Office of Climate Change and Renewables Innovation and ratification of the Kyoto Protocol in Paris on Monday.

"He's added very, very significantly on top of what was already in place," he told ABC radio on Tuesday.
