Hurricanes beat Thunder by 11 runs

Sydney Thunder have lost their first Big Bash League match for the summer, beaten by 11 runs by the Hobart Hurricanes.

A sensational late three-wicket over has helped deliver the Hobart Hurricanes an 11-run win over Sydney Thunder in the BBL.

Needing 27 runs off the last three overs at Bellerive Oval on Friday night, the Thunder looked well placed to chase down a 164-run total for victory.

Skipper Mike Hussey (71) had been faultless as he carved up the small ground.

But the return of Jake Reed (3-35) to the Hurricanes' attack precipitated a late collapse.

Hussey was out first, caught on the boundary trying to notch up his 11th four.

From the next ball Chris Hartley (0) was run out when Dan Christian (0-22) fired in a direct-hit from the outfield.

Reed's next delivery claimed the scalp of Chris Green (5), caught behind.

The visitors finished 9-152 after 20 overs with big names Jacques Kallis and Shane Watson both caught without score in the first over of the innings, bowled by Shaun Tait (3-16).

"The wicket had a bit in it for the fast bowlers," man of the match Tait told the Ten Network after play.

"It was a good game, a good win."

Spinner Cameron Boyce (2-24) was also valuable.

After Hussey won the toss and chose to bowl first the hosts' effort was led by George Bailey who finished unbeaten on 56.

In the field Andre Russell took a screamer, flying horizontally at deep cover to snare one of the summer's best catches and dismiss the dangerous Christian for 5.

Thunder's fast bowler Clint McKay (4-28) spearheaded Sydney's attack.

The result, in front of a record Bellerive cricket crowd of 17,151, is the Thunder's first loss for the season.

Hussey told reporters he was pleased with his side's performance against a Hurricanes outfit which is high on confidence.

"A couple of little things didn't go our way," the captain said.

"There are a couple of small pieces of cricket we would like to improve on but all in all it was a good game."

Both McKay and Russell drew praise from the skipper.

"It's one of the best catches I've ever seen," Hussey said of Russell's catch.

"We all know how hard Dan Christian can hit the ball and that's absolutely phenomenal athleticism to be able to hang on to that."

The Thunder have a quick turnaround for Sunday's clash with Brisbane Heat at the Gabba.

Hurricanes play at Bellerive on Monday versus the Melbourne Renegades.
