Hurricanes face a revamp after dull season

Finishing seventh in the BBL for a second straight year, Hobart Hurricanes will consider their options, including making changes to players and coaching staff.

Skipper Tim Paine and coach Damien Wright could be among those who pay the price for Hobart Hurricanes' disappointing BBL season.

With only nine players still in contract for next summer, including injury-plagued paceman Shaun Tait, there's the potential for a cleanout.

"Tim is out of contract so we will have a chat to Tim in the next few days to get a feel of where he's at with his cricket," Cricket Tasmania boss Andrew Dykes said.

Asked if fourth-year coach Wright will be asked to stay, Dykes answered: "I can't answer that right now".

Hurricanes finished a lowly seventh for the second straight season, their slim chance of a finals berth ended by a seven-wicket loss to ladder-leaders Perth Scorchers on Saturday.

"It was a disappointing season," Dykes said.

"As always we go into the Big Bash with high expectations, we put together a very strong list and felt we could make the top-four but things didn't work out that way and we need now to sit back and reflect and work out the way forward."

The workload of skipper, opener and wicketkeeper Paine could be reduced in one option for the island team.

"To bring a new captain in from outside the group may be something we consider but certainly at the moment Tim Paine is our captain," Dykes said.

In any case, external pressures mean a radical revamp of the playing group is unlikely.

"The challenge is a lot of the better domestic players around the country are already contracted so the opportunity to bring in a mass number of players is not there," Dykes said.

"On the surface it may look easy to find some international players, but unfortunately because of the international schedule it's not as straight forward as it seems."

Former Sri Lankan Test skipper and World T20 batting champion Kumar Sangakkara failed to shine during his two seasons with the Hurricanes and was dropped for their last three matches due to a slump in form.

England fast bowler Stuart Broad impressed but will likely be unavailable next season due to Ashes commitments.

Wright, who is keen to keep his coaching gig, said the Hurricanes need to import bowling strength as a priority with paceman Tait's future in doubt.

"There's an ongoing discussion with Shaun Tait around his contract status and where he's at with his body," Dykes said.
