Japanese ace Kosuke Hagino said on Friday he would not compete at the world swimming championships after breaking his right elbow during training.

Hagino suffered the injury when he fell off a bike at the national team's training camp in France.

He returned to Japan on Thursday and was diagnosed with a fractured right elbow.

The 20-year-old Hagino won four golds at the 2014 Asian Games at Incheon in South Korea.

He is the defending world champion in the men's 200-metre individual medley. He also won silver in the 400m IM at last year's worlds in Doha.

The 2015 world championships will be held from July 24-August 9 at Kazan in Russia.
