Producers of the Oscar-winning film The Hurt Locker are suing 5,000 people who illegally downloaded their film using BitTorrent.

Technology website TGDaily.com says it's one of the biggest ever copyright violation lawsuits ever launched against individuals.

Voltage Pictures, which produced the film, plans to force internet service providers to release the names of the downloaders this week

If people are found guilty, they'll be forced to pay up to US$1,500 each.

Critically-acclaimed The Hurt Locker was one of the big winners at the 2010 Oscars, scooping six Academy Awards including Best Director for Kathryn Bigelow.
