The three adult sons of missing teacher Sharon Edwards say they are coming to terms with their father being charged with her murder.

John Wallace Edwards, 60, was extradited from Queensland to NSW on Wednesday and charged with murdering his wife, two years after she disappeared from the Lawrence area north of Grafton in northern NSW.

Edwards didn't apply for bail at Tweed Heads Local Court and it was formally refused.

He was earlier charged at the local police station with murdering his estranged wife in March, 2015.

"It's something that no family should ever have to go through," Ms Edwards' family - including her sons Zac, Josh and Eli - said in a statement to AAP.

"We miss (Sharon) dearly. She was such a beautiful and loving person. We are working with the police to help them with their investigation."

Edwards was the last person to see his wife alive and he reported her missing on March 17, three days after she disappeared.

On the evening of Saturday, March 14, the 55-year-old teacher had been out for dinner with friends at a local pub and then went home and changed clothes.

She was due to teach classes on the Monday but failed to turn up.

Her car was parked in the garage but her wallet, phone and keys were missing, NSW Police said.

A few weeks later authorities revealed her disappearance was being treated as a murder investigation.

Cadaver dogs searched three properties belonging to the Edwards family, and detectives seized items from the family home at Grafton where Ms Edwards was last seen.

Two weeks after her disappearance, Edwards pleaded on television for information regarding his wife's whereabouts. Her body has never been recovered.

Police on Tuesday arrested Edwards at a home in Redcliffe, north of Brisbane, following two years of extensive investigations.

"We are satisfied that an altercation has taken place that has led to the death of Mrs Edwards," Detective Inspector Darren Jameson told reporters.

Edwards will next appear at Lismore Local Court on August 22.
