The husband of a Melbourne woman who died on Mount Everest says he blames himself for failing to protect her.

Dr Maria Strydom died on the climb on May 21, after her husband had climbed the summit, returned to her and tried to bring her back down the mountain.

"I'm her husband, it's my job to protect my wife and get her home and it's just natural for me to blame myself," Robert Gropel told the Seven Network on Sunday.
