A slow-combustion heater may have sparked a fatal fire that's ripped through a home in Sydney's Hawkesbury region claiming the life of a 65-year-old man.

The man's 64-year-old wife managed to escape the burning weatherboard home in Glossodia, which went up in flames just before 2am on Monday, police said.

Fire crews worked for an hour to bring the control the blaze before discovering the man's body near the front door.

The couple had reportedly lived in the home for 47 years. Family members, including the man's children, have arrived at the destroyed residence, Network Seven reports.

A Fire & Rescue spokesman said the fire is believed to not be suspicious and that a slow-combustion heater may have ignited the blaze.
