Hussey, Kallis cautious on Thunder success

Sydney Thunder captain Mike Hussey has warned his unbeaten BBL outfit against complacency after their rise to the top of the Twenty20 competition ladder.

Sydney Thunder captain Mike Hussey and fellow Big Bash League superstar Jacques Kallis are keen to keep a lid on any excitement over their team's start to the season, despite the long-time easybeats emerging as the team to beat this summer.

After thrashing Adelaide Strikers by seven wickets at Spotless Stadium on Monday night, the unbeaten Thunder have leapt to the top of the BBL ladder.

It is the first time Sydney have won three matches in a season.

They won only three games in their past three seasons, and have won just five games over the four-year history of the Twenty20 tournament.

Just two more wins will likely secure them a breakthrough finals spot.

But Hussey is warning his players against complacency.

"I know the nature of this game, T20 cricket, and cricket in general, it can turn pretty quickly if you get ahead of yourself," Hussey said.

"If you think you are a bit better than what you are, this game has a way of bringing you back down to earth.

"We are breaking new ground at this club. That is a record for the most number of wins in the season, that is a good tick, but there is a long way to go."

The Thunder won two games in BBL 1 in 2011/12 and then endured a losing streak that stretched across three summers when they went winless the following season and again struggled in 2013/14 when they won just one game.

Last season Sydney managed two victories.

They next play Hobart Hurricanes in Tasmania on New Year's Day, then meet Brisbane Heat in Queensland two days later.

"I feel we have a good squad and I want us to go further in this competition," Hussey said.

"So we will keep a lid on it, we will keep analysing ways we can get better.

"There have been some good performances so far but we are pretty hungry."

Kallis says it's important for the Thunder to enjoy their success - but they need to go on with the job too.

"We will try and rein it (the excitement) in," Kallis said.

"We will say to them enjoy tonight, enjoy the next day and then the hard work starts again, it will be no different to how we went about the first two games.

"I think the guys have their heads screwed on and they will be ready to put in a big performance in the next game."

The Strikers loss to the Thunder was their first defeat of this season's tournament.

They next face Sydney Sixers in Adelaide on New Year's Eve.
