A 20,000-litre shipping container has leaked hydrochloric acid at the Port of Melbourne, Australia's busiest container port.

A shipping container has leaked hydrochloric acid onto the dock at the Port of Melbourne.

After staff on Friday morning noticed an 8mm hole in the 20,000 tank, specialist MFB crews placed an inflatable device underneath it to block fluid and vapour leakage.

MFB crews are expected to remain for several hours at the West Melbourne docks - Australia's busiest container port - while arrangements are made to move the acid to a new tank.
