The federal energy minister says he understands the concerns of crossbench senator Nick Xenophon, who is threatening to stall the Turnbull government's flagship company tax cuts until an energy crisis is resolved.

Josh Frydenberg said the independent South Australian senator had seen first hand the perils of a push for 50 per cent renewables in the energy mix, but insisted the government's agenda ought be dealt with on its merits.

"We're very focused on finding solutions, practical solutions, without the ideology to meet the energy challenges we face as a nation," Mr Frydenberg told ABC Radio on Thursday.
