I felt sorry for the man on the street: PM

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has defended his decision to give a man on a Melbourne street money, saying he felt sorry for the guy.

Malcolm Turnbull is sorry if people thought he shouldn't have given money to a man begging on a Melbourne street.

"I felt sorry for the guy," he told Neil Mitchell on 3AW radio on Friday, after he was photographed shaking the man's hands and giving him $5 on the way to delivering a major economic speech.

"It was a human reaction and I'm sorry if that has disappointed some people."

Everytime he sees someone in that situation, the prime minister says he always thinks "there but for the grace of God go I".
