I must step as Broncos captain: Boyd

Darius Boyd insists Brisbane have put their last round 52-34 NRL loss to Parramatta behind them but says he must step up as Broncos skipper.

Rookie leader Darius Boyd admits he has to step up as Brisbane captain in the wake of their humiliating NRL loss to Parramatta.

Boyd insisted the Broncos had put last round's humbling 52-34 defeat behind them ahead of Thursday night's crunch regular season finale against North Queensland in Townsville.

However, the Brisbane skipper said he was still keen to make amends for his display in the nine tries to six rout.

In his first year at the Brisbane helm, Boyd said he would need to lift as a leader in the crucial clash with their arch rivals.

The Cowboys are desperate for a win to secure a finals spot while Brisbane are trying to nail down a top four finish and a home final.

"I am a perfectionist. I want to do my best and lead the team as best I can," Boyd said.

"I didn't play my best football on Thursday night.

"I need to pick my game up.

"I need to find a way to lead the team in a better way, in actions or by words."

But Boyd said he wouldn't be telling them to curb their attacking ways despite it backfiring spectacularly against the Eels.

Parramatta winger Kirisome Auva'a scored the fastest try in NRL history within 13 seconds after pouncing on a pushed pass by Adam Blair in the match's opening tackle.

The Eels soon raced to a 24-0 lead and 30-10 halftime buffer before becoming just the second team to put 50 points on Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium.

"We are one of the best attacking teams in the competition," Boyd said.

"We pride ourselves on sticking to things if they work and nine times out of 10 it does.

"While it is something you want to put in the back of your mind (not push passes) you don't want to shut up shop and not play footy."

Four of the past five derbies have been decided in extra-time.

Boyd welcomed a tough hit-out ahead of the finals.

"Cowboys games are always a tough game especially up there," he said.

"And there is a lot on the line.

"There is a lot of mutual respect and we play similar football.

"I think that's why it is always such a great spectacle; it's a great way to finish the season off."
