Boris Becker says he would love to see Lleyton Hewitt play doubles for Australia in this week's Davis Cup first-round tie in Brisbane - even if it is at the expense of his beloved Germany.

Australia on Wednesday were saying little on whether team captain Hewitt would link with doubles specialist John Peers against Germany at Pat Rafter Arena after the two-time grand slam champ had talked up his chances of another comeback.

Hewitt - who retired from singles in 2016 - is still buzzing from an Australian Open quarter-final finish with Sam Groth and has not ruled out returning this weekend to the court.

Six-time grand slam champion Becker hoped Hewitt would play in Brisbane after watching in awe as the former world No.1 hit the practice court on Wednesday with Australia.

"I don't rule out Lleyton Hewitt playing doubles. I would personally like that very much," said former world No.1 Becker, now the head of German men's tennis.

"He is one of the all-time greats who played in my era.

"Watching him at practice here, it is amazing the shape he is still in."

Besides their doubles pairing, a Nick Kyrgios-led Australia are also yet to decide on their second player for Friday's opening singles action.

Rookie Alex de Minaur is a chance of getting the nod for the No.2 singles spot ahead of teammates Jordan Thompson and John Millman.

All will be revealed on Thursday at the draw.

Until then, Australia look set to keep Germany guessing.

World No.4 doubles player Peers said every doubles combination in the team was up for grabs ahead of the draw.

However, he admitted Hewitt was not doing any damage to his Cup claims on the practice court.

"He's an unbelievable competitor and unbelievable ambassador," Peers said.

"When he keeps playing as well as he has, we will see what happens (at the Cup draw).

"But we are ready to go whatever combination we go with - we will see."

Germany will be spearheaded by world No.5 Alexander Zverev in Brisbane.

They trail Australia 4-3 in head-to-head Davis Cup clashes but won the last tie, a 2012 world group playoff 3-2 in Hamburg.
