Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Tryone Mings of Bournemouth both face the prospect of lengthy Premier League bans after they were charged with violent conduct for separate incidents in Saturday's 1-1 draw.
Mings appeared to stamp on Ibrahimovic while the Swede then seemed to elbow the defender soon after.
Neither incident was seen by the match officials at the time but were caught on video and discussed at length on television and in the media.
Stamping carries a stronger punishment than use of an elbow and in a statement, the FA said Mings could face a longer ban.
"The FA has submitted a claim that the standard punishment that would otherwise apply for the misconduct committed by the Bournemouth defender is 'clearly insufficient'," it said.
A panel of three former elite referees will examine the charges, reviewing the footage independently of each other to determine whether they consider it a sending-off offence.
For action to be taken against either player the decision of the panel must be unanimous.
