All Australians would be disappointed and disgusted about alleged corrupt behaviour by former NSW Labor ministers, Treasurer Chris Bowen says.

The NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption on Wednesday found former Labor powerbroker Eddie Obeid and former NSW mining minister Ian Macdonald had acted corruptly.

They were both referred for possible criminal prosecution.

Mr Bowen, a federal NSW Labor MP, said the legal process should be allowed to take its course.

"I think all NSW residents and all Australians would be very disappointed, as I am and as the prime minister is, about people abusing their office and betraying their community and their party," Mr Bowen told reporters in Brisbane.

He said the prime minister had taken strong action in ordering federal intervention in the NSW ALP branch and seeking changes to party rules to stamp out corrupt behaviour.
