ICAC probes Sydney Uni 'security scam'

Sydney University's private security provider is being investigated by the anti-corruption watchdog following allegations employees submitted fake timesheets.

NSW's anti-corruption watchdog is probing allegations that private security guards at the University of Sydney have been submitting fake timesheets for a decade.

The Independent Commission Against Corruption will hold a four-week public inquiry from mid-February into the allegations that false timesheets have been submitted to the university for payment since 2009.

The watchdog will also investigate whether any university staff were bribed to help the security guards allegedly involved in the scam.

ICAC's Operation Gerda has been investigating security services provider Sydney Night Patrol and Inquiry and its subcontractor SInternational Group.

The University of Sydney says it first became aware of the allegations in early 2017 and subsequently informed the anti-corruption watchdog.

"We are currently tendering for a number of our operational services including security," a spokeswoman said in a statement on Friday.

"After becoming aware of the ICAC investigation we reduced the services provided by SNP.

"These are now provided by other contractors while the tender process is completed."

SNP Security told AAP in a statement: "We are unable to make comments on matters regarding client matters."
