An illegal waste facility in Sydney's southwest and its director have been fined $37,500 by the Environment Protection Authority after the discovery of more than 65,000 tonnes of waste, including asbestos-contaminated material.
The EPA fined Crush and Haul Pty Ltd in Badgerys Creek $15,000 for operating the unlawful waste site and a further $15,000 for failing to comply with a Clean-up Notice.
Director Luke Cauchi was also fined $7500 for overseeing the illegal operations.
After the discovery of the 65,000 tonnes of waste in December, the EPA directed Crush and Haul to remove all waste by April 11, which it failed to do.
"It's vital that waste facilities are licensed to ensure environmental controls are in place that protect the community and the environment," EPA Director of Waste and Resource Recovery Steve Beaman said in a statement on Friday.

"Polluted runoff and dust can have off-site impacts if not properly managed."
Aside from asbestos, the waste is said to include recovered glass and crushed stone.
Mr Beaman said Crush and Haul had made some progress towards cleaning up the site but more was needed, and the EPA would continue to pursue the matter.
