Iluka to spend up to $290m in Sierra Leone

Iluka Resources plans to invest hundreds of millions to bolster safety and boost output its new Sierra Leone based acquisition Sierra Rutile.

Sand miner Iluka Resources could spend more than $290 million on ramping up production, streamlining operations and improving safety at Sierra Rutile after completing a merger with the Sierra Leone-based miner.

Iluka said it would conduct feasibility studies on spending up to $214 million on expanding production at three mines in the West African country over the next three to five years.

The sand miner also expects to spend $80 million on improving operational and safety performance measures at Sierra Rutile over the next two years.
