Income tax cuts pass the lower house

The federal government has succeeded in getting its personal income tax cuts through the lower house, but they'll still need to pass the Senate.

The federal government's personal income tax cuts have passed their first challenge, getting through the lower house.

Labor supported the government on a new low and middle-income tax offset that would provide $530 a year and the lifting of the 32.5 per cent tax bracket from $87,000 to $90,000, both starting July 1.

But shadow treasurer Chris Bowen was defeated in attempts to separate those measures from further tax cuts in 2022 and a reduction in 2024, a move the opposition is expected to pursue in the Senate.
