Sunday's Dateline on SBS ONE came from the newest country in the world, South Sudan, which came into existence over the weekend after the region's five decades of civil war with northern Sudan.

Yalda Hakim hosted the program amid the celebrations in the capital, Juba, but there's no doubt that huge challenges lie ahead for this fledgling nation, with disputes remaining over part of the border.

It's also one of world's least developed areas, but has rich supplies of oil and undeveloped agricultural land.

So is South Sudan ready for independence?
