Index ranks Qld university among highest

The University of Queensland has remained Australia's top-ranked research institutions on an international index based on publications in science journals.

The University of Queensland (UQ) has retained its position as Australia's highest-ranking research institution on an international index.

The Nature Index, which rates institutions and countries according to the number and quality of research publications across 68 of the world's leading science journals, has listed UQ as number 89 of 500.

UQ has remained Australia's highest-placed institution on the list for the past two years.

It was also ranked as number 27 in the Asia-Pacific region.

Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Peter Hoj singled out UQ's biology, microbiology, neuroscience, genetics, medicine and biotechnology work as some of its strongest.

"The vast majority of UQ's research is co-published with other organisations, giving our researchers collaboration opportunities with many of the highest-ranked experts in the world," he said.

"Equally, the world has access to UQ's finest minds in the many areas where we have leading expertise."

Other Australian institutions ranked high within the index included Monash at number 93 globally, the Australian National University at 100 and the University of Melbourne at 130.

Harvard University topped the index, followed by Stanford and the University of Tokyo.
